Robert Benjamin was raised in the Duffyfield community of New Bern, NC. He attended Duffyfield Elementary School, West Street Elementary School, J. T. Barber High School, and graduated from New Bern High School.

He then entered the U.S. Army, serving three years as a Personnel Specialist. Returning home, he attended Craven Community College for one year, served in the National Guard, and re-entered the military after one year of college. Benjamin spent 19 years as a Medical Specialist in the U.S. Army before retiring in 1995.

After returning to New Bern, he completed his B.S. in Criminal Justice. He worked with the Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer, Case Manager, Case Analyst and Correctional Training Specialist before retiring in 2013.

He continues to be active in the community by assisting released inmates, driving school buses, assisting citizens with voting. Benjamin is a member of several civic organizations. He is a property owner with a stake in the greater Duffyfield Community.
